The objectives of Bariatric Surgery are to obtain a weight loss of at least 50% of the excess weight and to be able to keep the weight off. These outcomes are expected in 70% of all those who undergo the procedure. The significant weight loss will greatly improve or bring to remission the comorbidities that the person had with the excess weight.
Some other factors that are considered by the physician are:
- Use and failure of non-surgical treatment
- Determine if there are any endocrine diseases that may be causing obesity such as Cushing disease or problems with the Thyroid Gland
- Psycho-social evaluation
